Bed bugs are able to inhabit beds, box springs, mattresses, furniture and clothing. If they enter a home, it's easy for them to spread from one area to another. Finding a comfortable place to settle in and reproduce is no problem for them. When their environment is hospitable they can continue reproducing and create a severe infestation. These creatures have excellent mobility and move quickly in the dark. You may experience bites during the evening hours but it will be hard to identify where the bug came from as it scurries off into its shelter immediately afterwards.

The Traveling Bed Bug

Bed bugs can spread rapidly due to their agility and the ease with which they can traverse through cracks in walls. An infestation can also originate if you inadvertently bring them into your home after visiting someone else's house or any public area. Furthermore, bed bugs may be acquired while travelling as they can easily stow away in suitcases, boxes and clothing. This is how bed bugs migrate; they simply take advantage of a free ride and settle into your home. If you believe you have bed bug infestation, it's important to act fast in order to limit their spread and prevent further damage.

Stop Bed Bugs from Spreading to Other Rooms

You can search for ways to get rid of bed bugs, but it is also wise to learn how you can stop them from spreading in order to avoid recurring infestations in your home. Here are a few things you can do to prevent the spread of bed bugs in rooms:
  • Get rid of clutter that offers bed bugs places to hide. This is a good way of eradicating them.
  • Refrain from bringing second-hand furniture into your house, as it could potentially be infested with the pests and their eggs.
  • Invest in protective covers for your mattress and box spring, as these will keep critters from climbing on them and making them their hiding spot while you sleep.
  • Schedule a specific day to launder all bed linens using the hottest temperature setting of your washing machine and clothes dryer.
  • Vacuuming regularly is also helpful in trapping bed bugs that may be on carpets or other parts of your house, as well as their eggs. For optimal results, use HEPA vacuums which are designed to capture bugs and their eggs from any surface.
  • When traveling, inspect the bed frame and sleeping area carefully before settling down; if you notice signs of infestation, ask to stay in another room instead. Lastly, pack all worn clothes and belongings into plastic bags before heading back home.
  • Utilize Shared Laundry Services Prudently
  • Put your clothes into a plastic bag and put them directly into the washing machine. When finished, take out the garments from the dryer quickly and place them in a fresh plastic bag to do the folding at home.
  • Plug up gaps and fissures in walls
  • Cracks are usual spots where these creatures creep to get into adjoining rooms. Block off them appropriately to prevent them from taking over nearby areas.
  • Refrain from transferring items between rooms
  • This will decrease the likelihood of spreading the bugs even more through furniture or other objects.
To keep a bed bug infestation from spreading, it's important to treat the affected area and be vigilant in looking for signs of bed bugs. Don't leave the room alone; this could lead to bugs migrating to other rooms in search of food.

What the Pros Say about Bed Bugs

The primary reason many homes experience severe bed bug infestations is a lack of knowledge on how to prevent their spread. To start, it's important to ensure your room is clean and free from areas where these bugs can hide. When transferring items, such as laundry, make sure it's placed in either a plastic bag or water-soluble laundry bag that can be put straight into the washing machine. Additionally, use a HEPA vacuum for vacuuming all crevices and corners of each room in the house - this type of vacuum will effectively capture and contain bed bugs. Furthermore, protect your mattress by investing in bed bug mattress and box spring encasements - this will help stop the critters from feeding off you repeatedly.

Keep Bed Bugs in One Room

It might not be feasible to completely isolate bed bugs, but there are steps you can take to stop them from migrating to other rooms in your house. To do this, sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the walls of the infested room. This powder should be placed along the baseboards so that it will prevent any bugs from moving into another space. The only exit left is the door, so we suggest putting interceptors at the end of each line of powder spread across it. It is important to reduce your chances of distributing bed bugs throughout your home, so we recommend leaving items inside an infected room and not carrying them outside. If necessary, you can carefully place them in a plastic bag and wash them at a high temperature setting in order to kill any existing pests or eggs.

It is important to not bring items from other locations, particularly public areas, into your home. If you can, it is best to put your work clothes in the washing machine rather than bringing them inside or even wearing them to bed. Despite how exhausted you may be after a long day at work, these precautions should be taken in order to prevent bed bug infestations. Setting up detectors around your house is also a good way of continually checking for bed bugs and gauging the effectiveness of your prevention techniques.
